Therapy for religious trauma & spiritual abuse
Amanda Gormley, LAC
Trauma Therapist | Tucson, Arizona
I am a cult survivor and a trained mental health therapist. It is my life’s work to help others find their way to safety, freedom, and self-trust.
Surviving religious trauma or spiritual abuse does not have to be a loss of everything that gives your life meaning. Find your way to a safe, engaged, and trusting connection with yourself and the spiritual world —however you conceive it now.
Clients come to me when:
Authoritarian, high-control religious experiences have instilled a deep sense of fear or shame that they can’t shake.
They are deconstructing religious beliefs after leaving a faith group.
They feel conflicted about how to live their values without the structure of religion.
They want to reconnect with feelings of awe and resonance in their lives.
How religious trauma and spiritual abuse therapy with me works
Faith traditions promise us safety, peace, and community. But when that system falters, it creates ripples across your entire life.
Threshold Counseling is a space to unpack the feelings that come with religious trauma and spiritual abuse and to find solid footing in your truth and values. Through this process, you will move toward a life rooted in safety, freedom, and self-trust.
-
Process painful memories and beliefs that feel stuck. Using bilateral stimulation alongside reflective and relational approaches, we gently work through experiences that continue to shape how you feel, relate, and move through the world.
-
Explore the stories you’ve been told — or have told yourself — about who you are. Together, we examine those stories to create space for a more compassionate and authentic understanding of yourself.
-
Through experiential exercises and dialogue, we explore patterns, protective responses, and different ways of experiencing yourself with greater curiosity and understanding.
-
Integrate hands-on tools to support emotional balance, self-understanding, and meaningful change.
-
Explore meaning and purpose through non-secular spiritual experiences like awe and resonance
“Out beyond the ideas of rightdoing and wrongdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”

Getting Started with Therapy
1. Schedule a Consultation
I’ll ask you a little about your goals, and you’ll have a chance to ask me about my approach, process, and any other questions you have. There’s no cost, and obligation to move forward. This is where we feel each other out. Most consults are over a secure virtual connection, but in-person consultations are also available.
2. Intake Session
If we agree to work together, we will schedule a 90-minute intake session. This is so that I can get a deeper sense of your history, strengths, and challenges. We’ll work together to tailor a treatment plan just for you that addresses your goals. We’ll also determine a time and cadence for therapy sessions.
3. Therapy Sessions
Therapy takes place at a pace that is comfortable for you and based on your treatment plan. Most clients meet for 60 minutes once per week or biweekly. Therapy can be brief and solution-focused or tailored for more long-term growth and support. I also offer extended EMDR intensives for people who feel ready for intensive work.
